Ohio House Passes Bill to Give State Employees Paid Leave for Organ Donation

The Ohio House has passed a bill that would give full-time state employees up to 30 days of paid leave to be a living donor of a kidney or part of their liver for transplantation.

Rep. Gregory Jolivette, sponsor of the bill which now goes to the Senate, said the legislation has the support of Gov. Bob Taft and would make Ohio the seventh state to give workers paid leave for organ donations.

Jolivette expressed the hope that local governments and private employers will follow the state's lead.

"This bill will save lives," Jolivette said. The $50,000-a-year cost of kidney dialysis would be eliminated by one $30,000 kidney transplant, cutting health-care costs, he said.
