Freddy Fender Has Living-Donor Kidney Transplant

Two-time Grammy award-winning singer Freddy Fender received a living-donor kidney transplant at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio with a kidney donated by his 21-year-old daughter, Marla Huerta Garcia.

Fender, 64, who has diabetes and hepatitis C, was reported in stable condition. Huerta Garcia was reported in good condition and doctors said she should be discharged from the hospital in a few days.

"He and his daughter are doing very well and we anticipate that his recovery will be smooth,'' surgeon Ken Washburn told reporters.

Fender, who has been nominated this year for another Grammy for best Latin Pop Album, was said to be hoping to attend the February 27th ceremony in Los Angeles.
