Dr. Robert Corry, Pancreas Transplant Pioneer, Dead at 67

Dr. Robert J. Corry, a transplant surgeon who was one of the pioneers of pancreas transplantation, has died at the age of 67.

After 18 years at the University of Iowa, including 10 years as the chief of surgery, Corry moved to the University of Pittsburgh in 1994 where he established pancreas transplants as a prominent clinical service.

Corry helped perfect techniques in pancreas transplant surgery, and was the first to perform a combined liver and pancreas procurement from a cadaver donor and then transplant the organs into two recipients. In all, Dr. Corry performed more than 600 pancreas, kidney and liver transplants.

He served as president of both the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the United Network for Organ Sharing.
