A 19-year-old youth
awaiting a heart transplant at OSF St. Francis Medical Center
in Peoria, Illinois, died because he was incorrectly connected
to a heart assist machine, according to a coroner's jury.
Terrance T. McKnight,
who was suffering from congestive heart failure, was connected
to one machine but it began to make a noise. So an unknown staff
member switched him to a different machine but hooked the color-coded
leads up backward causing the death, according to coroner Dan
Heinz.
Chris Lofgren,
a spokesperson for the medical center, said an internal investigation
is underway and the hospital has "made changes so it doesn't
happen again."
