New Mexico's only heart
transplant program at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque is
closing after 15 years as a result of declining demand, according
to hospital officials.
"The
volume in our heart transplant program has been declining for
the last five years," said Dr. Paul Cochran, medical director
of the Presbyterian Heart Program. "It was better now to
make a proactive move than wait until we had a bad outcome."
While doctors
at one point were performing eight to 10 heart transplants a year,
the number fell to four in 1999, four in 2000 and one in 2001.
The University
of New Mexico Hospital ended its liver transplant program, also
the only one in the state, in July 2000. That leaves kidneys as
the only organ that can have transplanted in New Mexico.
