Head of Underperforming Arizona OPO Asked to Resign

Jack Cremin, head of Donor Network of Arizona, has been asked to resign, according to members of the organ procurement organization's board of directors.

"It was a consensus of the entire group, and it (the decision) was positive," said board member Dr. Philip Fracica.

The decision was taken less than a month after transplant surgeon Dr. David Mulligan of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale complained to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that the OPO was in a "crisis situation" with the state's donor level among the lowest in the country.

The OPO has been criticized by federal regulators who believe not enough is being done to boost organ donation in Arizona.

The OPO's medical director, Dr. Arnold Serota, also agreed to resign, a board member said.
