Phase II Trial of Bridge Device for Liver Transplant Patients Underway

VitaGen Incorporated announced it has begun enrolling patients with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) in a multicenter Phase II clinical trial of its ELAD® system designed to keep the patients alive until they can have a liver transplant or recover.

The ELAD human-cell based liver support system is designed to combine the unique and potentially powerful benefits of cell therapy with a reliable medical device similar to that used in kidney dialysis treatment, a company spokesperson said.

In an earlier Phase I/II trial at six transplant centers, initial outcomes showed 11 of 12 ELAD-treated patients were successfully bridged to transplant or recovery, compared to 3 of 7 of the controls, the spokesperson added.
