Dr. Robert J. Corry,
a pioneering transplant surgeon who died at his home in Pittsburgh
in February (see Transplant Week story),
died of head injuries sustained two days earlier in a car accident,
according to the county coroner.
Corry, 67,
whose car had struck a tree, refused medical treatment at the
scene, according to a spokesman for the coroner's office.
Dr. Ricard
Townsend, a trauma surgeon at University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center, noted that head injuries can cause bleeding or brain swelling
that may lack immediate symptoms but can later dramatically worsen.
When that occurs, patients often can't help themselves, he said.
"The
problem that he had is that he was alone following the accident,"
said Townsend.
