New York Health Department
spokeswoman Kristine Smith said 41 living-donor adult-to-adult
liver transplants performed at Mount Sinai Hospital are being
reviewed as part of the state's probe into the January death of
a liver donor at the New York City center.
State health officials
in a report last month cited grievous errors in the post surgical
care of Michael Hurewitz, 57, who donated 60 percent of his liver
to his brother (see earlier Transplant
Week story).
The living-donor adult-to-adult
liver transplant program at Mount Sinai remains suspended by the
state, and Smith
said a working group would meet in about a month to explore issues
involving the surgery. The makeup of the working group
has not been announced.
