Pope John Paul II, who has been far more supportive of transplantation
than any of his predecessors, has issued another strong appeal
to Roman Catholics to consider doing good works by donating their
organs upon their death.
Noting that this past Sunday had been designated Organ Donation
and Transplant Day, the Pontiff said he hoped that "the solidarity
of many would give hope to the many sick people waiting for a
transplant."
Two years ago, Pope John Paul addressed transplant professionals
attending the International Congress of the Transplantation Society
in Rome.
