Gift of Life OPO Sets New High With 42 Donors and 132 Organs in March

The Gift of Life Donor Program, the organ procurement organization serving parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delarare, set a new one-month national record by coordinating retrieval of 132 organs from 42 donors during the month of March.

"Heightened public awareness through the driver's license registry, as well as the commitment of hospitals to give each family the opportunity to carry out their loved one's decision and give others a second chance at life, are the primary reasons for this increase, " said Howard M. Nathan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gift of Life.

More than 3.5 million Pennsylvanians -- 40.1 percent of the state's drivers -- have now registered as organ donors and in Delaware, which has a similar registry, more than 42 percent of the state's drivers have placed the organ donor designation on their license, a Gift of Life spokesperson said.

During the first quarter of 2002, the OPO said it retrieved 304 organs from 93 donors -- a 29 percent increase in donors and 49 percent increase in organs that were transplanted over the previous year.
