Pittsburgh VA Hospital Joins 3 Others Designated Kidney Transplant Centers

Veterans in need of kidney transplants once again have the option of having the procedure performed at a Veterans Affairs hospital.

A New Jersey man received a living-donor kidney transplant at the Oakland Medical Center in Pittsburgh, which joins three other regional VA transplant centers in Nashville,TN, Portland, OR and Iowa City that have been designated VA kidney transplant centers.

Years ago, some 20 VA hospitals around the country performed kidney transplants, but the program waned after Medicare began covering the procedure, with most veterans chosing to have the transplants in private hospitals.

But as hospitals began charging co-payments for kidney transplants, many veterans again expressed the desire to have the operation at a VA hospital, according to Brenda Salvas, program manager for the VA's liver and kidney program.
