Father, Daughter Receive Kidneys From Same Donor

In a rare occurrence, an Alabama father and his daughter, both on the waiting list for kidney transplants, each received a kidney from the same cadaver donor, according to a repressentative of the Alabama Organ Center.

Yvonne Humphrey, 31, and her father Richard Cole, 61, each received a kidney at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital donated from a young woman who had died in a motor vehicle accident.

"It just does not happen,"Chuck Patrick, director of the Alabama Organ Center, said of the concidence.

Humphrey got a call at 1:30 in the morning saying that a matching kidney was available, and immediately began preparing for the trip to the medical center.

"It wasn't five or 10 minutes after that the phone rang again," Humphrey said. It was the Alabama Organ Center calling to say that another kidney was available for her father. She said the transplant coordinator was a bit confused and surprised by the father-daughter connection.
