Retired British
soccer legend George Best, 56, was reported doing "very,
very well" following a liver transplant at London's Cromwell
Hospital.
The former
alcoholic was placed on the transplant waiting list nine months
ago after doctors warned his liver had been permanently damaged
by decades of heavy drinking.
Best was rushed
to hospital after collapsing in March 2000, and doctors told him
that one more drink could kill him. As part of his treatment,
Best had stomach implants to make him sick if he touches alcohol.
In his weekly
newspaper column earlier this year, Best said he had not had a
drink in 12 months, a requirement for eligibility for a transplant.
Considered
one of the most talented players of all time, Best joined Manchester
United at age 16 and scored 115 goals in 290 league, cup and European
games, retiring in 1972.
