Bill Would Protect Health Insurance for Living Donors

Sen. Mike DeWine of Ohio has introduced legislation in Congress that would limit the ability of health plans to deny insurance coverage to any living organ donor and bar insurers from charging them discriminatory premiums.

The Living Organ Donation Bill is designed to remove one of the potential deterrents that may keep people from choosing to become living donors.

"This bill builds on the protections provided by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act so that living organ donors are neither denied insurance nor applied discriminatory insurance premiums.," DeWine said.

"With the number of living organ donors outnumbering cadaver donors, we should do all we can to provide insurance protections to living organ donors;" DeWine added.
