A mailman in rural Maryland who donated a kidney to
a retired school teacher who lives on his postal route has been
named national Hero of the Year by the 307,000-member National
Association of Letter Carriers.
Paul Wagoner,
42, of Short Gap, WV, was to be presented the award at a special
ceremony in Washington, DC.
Wagoner came
to the aid of one of his regular customers, Dave Phillips, after
learning of Phillips' long-time kidney difficulties (see earlier
Transplant Week story).
The successful transplant operation took place at the University
of Maryland Medical Center.
