New Hampshire residents have become part of a small but growing
organ donation phenomenon: the family-to-family kidney exchange.
Emily Smith,
18, donated a kidney to 22-year-old Sara St. Pierre while St.
Pierre's father, Fred St. Pierre, donated a kidney to Smith's
younger sister, 16-year-old Brittany Smith.
The paired
transplants, performed in two Boston hospitals, were coordinated
by the New England Organ Bank. They occurred because the recipients
were not compatible with any prospective donor from their own
family.
"I remember
feeling an awful lot along the lines of not being able to help
my daughter and being there for her," said Fred St. Pierre.
"But this way worked out for my family and theirs."
