The organs
of the son of a prominent New York rabbi, killed when hit by a
car while biking in Israel, have been transplanted into six people
including a Palestinian man.
Jonathan Greenberg,
37, son of Rabbi Yitzhak Greenberg, was biking with a friend when
struck by a car and fatally injured.
The decision
to donate organs drew attention in Israel where the country's
Chief Rabbinate has ruled that saving lives overrides the requirement
to bury an intact body, but not all rabbis recognize the decision.
This past
weekend, Greenberg's parents met at an Israeli hospital with two
men who received a kidney and a cornea from their son.
"The
meeting can't bring back our son and we can't get over what happened,"
Rabbi Greenberg was quoted as saying by the newspaper Maariv.
"But on the other hand there is a feeling of happiness and
we feel that Jonathan will continue to contribute to the lives
of others."
