Chinese Report Successful Double-Arm Transplant

Doctors in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province report they have successfully transplanted both arms from a cadaver donor to a 50-year-old man whose arms had been amputated in a machinery accident.

Zhang Kinying, director of orthopaedics at First Affiliated Medical College of the Harbin Medical University in Harbin, said the 15-hour operation took place a month ago, and both the patient and the transplanted arms were in good condition.

The donor was a man who had been pronounced brain dead, Zhang said.

Chen Fugen, the patient, had previously received a similar transplant in another hospita which failed due to infection in the newly transplanted limbs within a month, doctors said.
