Ex-Congressman Who Had Kidney Transplant at 78 in Critical Condition

 

Former Oregon Congressman John Dellenback, who in 1997 became the nation's oldest kidney transplant recipient at age 78,. was reported in critical condition with viral pneumonia at Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, OR.

Dellenback, now 84, received a living-donor kidney transplant at Oregon Health & Science University from his wife Mary Jane, who at age 68 was at the time the nation's third-oldest kidney donor.

Dellenback, who was elected to Congress in 1966 and served four terms, was appointed director of the Peace Corps in 1975 by President Ford, and served in that position for two years.
