A 5-year-old
girl received a living-donor kidney transplant at the University
of Wisconsin Hospital from a 38-year-old stranger who by chance
saw a newspaper ad placed by the girl's mother.
Angela Rushford
and the donor, David Harper, were both reported in stable condition
following the surgery.
"I owe
David Harper a lot," said Angela's father, Tony Rushford,
after the surgery. "When I was a kid, my hero was Spider-Man.
Now it's David Harper."
Harper, while
stopped at a gas station, picked up a copy of the Rock River Times,
a newspaper he had never seen before, and saw the ad placed by
Angela's mother seeking an O-positive donor.
When he responded
and was tested for compatibility, he turned out to be a three-out-of-six
antigen match.
"It's
very unusual and it's a lot of great luck for--for Angela and
her family -- that Mr. Harper not only came forward, but in addition,
he's a very good match," said her surgeon, Dr. Hans Sollinger.
Harper said
his faith prompted him to help: "I'm just trying to relate
what Christ would do."
