3 1/2-Month-Old Florida Girl Undergoes Third Liver Transplant

A 3 1/2-month-old Florida girl has undergone a third liver transplant in just over a month at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Brooke Ashley Compher was reportedly holding her own after the most recent five-hour surgery.

The child's ordeal began in November, when it was determined that a bacterial infection that still has not been identified was destroying her liver.

The first transplant took place on Thanksgiving, when Brooke received a cadaver liver from a pediatric donor.

Then just before Christmas, the same infection that destroyed her own liver attacked the transplanted liver. The day after Christmas, she received a portion of an adult liver.

However, an artery in that liver did not work properly, necessitating the third transplant, according to doctors.
