Men who have
had kidney transplants appear to be at somewhat greater risk of
prostate cancer, according to a report in the journal Transplantation.
Members of
the Renal Transplantation Committee of the French Urological Association
reported this conclusion after tracking outcomes of patients who
received kidneys in the late 1990s at 22 French transplant centers.
They reported
that among the 2,338 kidney transplant recipients followed up,
28 (1 percent) cases of prostate cancer had been diagnosed and
treated.
"The
incidence of prostate cancer in renal transplant recipients appeared
to be higher than expected," the researchers reported. "Prostate
specific antigen (PSA) testing should be performed routinely each
year in renal transplantation centers."
