The Canadian
provinces of Alberta and Quebec lead that country in cadaver organ
donations, but lag far behind the most successful programs in
the United States, according to the Canadian Institute for Health
Information.
New statistics
show that both Alberta and Quebec had 17.1 donors per million
population during the year 2002. That compares to several U.S.
states where the rate is above 30 per million.
Nevertheless,
the rate in Alberta and Quebec is significantly better than most
other Canadian provinces.
The Atlantic
provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island)
were next best with a rate of 15.2 per million, followed by Ontario
at 11.4, Saskatchewan at 10.9, Manitoba with 9.6 and British Columbia
at 7.3.
