Women in Sweden Receives Six- Organ Transplant

A woman in Sweden has received six new organs in a rare transplant operation in which all the organs came from a single donor, according to Swedish surgeons.

The woman, who was said to be in her 40s, received a new liver, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, intestine and kidney in an 18-hour operation conducted at Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Hospital.

The transplant of six organs is believed to have been performed only a few times previously in the United States. They were removed from the donor's body as a single package, cleaned and then cooled down before being transplanted into the woman's abdomen, doctors said.

The woman is now in intensive care and doing well, doctors told Swedish news agency TT.
