Oregon to Start Pediatric Heart Transplant Program During 2004

Oregon Health & Science University plans to start a pediatric heart transplant program later this year, enabling children to receive new hearts without leaving the state.

Heart transplants on teenagers and adults have been performed at the hospital since 1985.

For the past three years, OHSU has been building up its pediatric cardiac program at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

Before that, many children with complex heart ailments were sent to hospitals in California, but surgeons at OHSU now perform even the most delicate heart surgery on children.
