Transplant Surgeons, Heart Lost in Italian Plane Crash

An emergency medical flight carrying a heart for transplant crashed in mountains on the Italian island of Sardinia, killing two heart transplant surgeons, a nurse and three crew members.

The small plane was on its way back from the Italian capital of Rome, where it had retrieved the heart for a life-saving operation transplant.

About four hours after radar contact was lost, an air force rescue helicopter spotted the wreckage of the Cessna on Mount Cresia, an area said to be notorious among pilots for its strong air currents.

A member of the rescue team confirmed that all six people on board had died.
