U of Miami Transplant Center Partners With Transplant Week

Medical Week, L.L.C., publisher of online consumer health newsletters, today announced an agreement under which the Transplant Centers at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center will become the featured health information provider for Transplant Week (www.transplantweek.org).

"The Transplant Centers of the University of Miami are among the world's leaders in organ transplantation and research," said Medical Week Chairman Dr. Ronald M. Ferguson. "We are most pleased that they are going to be a key part of our effort to provide authoritative information about transplantation to patients and their families."

"We are very excited about partnering with Medical Week to help provide more reliable information about transplantation to patients via the Internet," said Dr. Joshua Miller, co-chair of the Transplant Centers of the University of Miami.

"We find that more and more patients in need of life-saving transplants - as well as people considering the possibility of becoming living organ donors -- are looking to the Internet for information, and we look forward to helping Transplant Week become the most authoritative and reliable source," Dr. Miller added.

The University of Miami Transplant Centers have one of the five most active programs in the United States, performing more than 400 kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, and intestine transplants each year. Patient outcomes each year rank among the highest in the country.

In addition, faculty are at the forefront of basic biomedical transplant science and clinical research, and the islet research program is a leader in the effort to find a cure for diabetes.

Contributing editors from the University of Miami Medical School faculty - with expertise in solid organ and islet transplantation - work with Transplant Week staff to present authoritative health information to the public, and review other content for clinical accuracy and relevance. In addition, faculty each month answer questions of general interest about transplantation submitted by Transplant Week subscribers.

Medical Week. is an independent company, founded by a group of leading medical and information professionals. Two-thirds of the board members are academic surgeons at leading U.S. medical schools. The chief executive, Milton R. Benjamin, is a former editor of the Washington Post Company.

In addition to Transplant Week, Medical Week over the next several months is launching Hepatitis Week, Alzheimer Week, Obesity Week, Prostate Cancer Week, Breast Cancer Week, Colorectal Cancer Week, Lung Cancer Week, and Depression Week.

All of Medical Week's online newsletters will be found on the internet at "www.(name of disease)week.org" or through links at www.medicalweek.org.

Dr. Ferguson said Medical Week anticipates announcing partnerships with leading medical centers for each of the newsletters in the months ahead.
