In what is believed to be a first, a California woman has had
a kidney-liver transplant where the kidney was donated by her
daughter and part of a liver was donated by her son.
Maria Alvarez, 57, had the dual transplant five months ago at
University of Southern California University Hospital, receiving
a kidney from Rosario Proscia, 34, and part of a liver from son
Jose Alvarez, 36.
Dr. Rick Shelby, the surgeon who performed the transplants, said
all three are recovering well from the surgeries.
''I believe it is the first
of this particular kind of transplant, when one child donates
a liver and another child donates a kidney to a parent,'' said
Selby.
Jose Alvarez said pain
from removal of part of his liver ended in about eight days. ''Mom
was very sick for 31/2 years, and we nearly saw her die,"
Alvarez said. ''We feel privileged that we were able to do this."
