Mexico to Send Organs So Mexicans Can Receive Transplants in U.S.

Mexico announced that it wants to begin a program that would send donated cadaver organs to the United States so Mexicans living illegally in the U.S. will not have to return home to receive a transplant.

The head of Mexico's office of immigrant affairs, Juan Hernandez, said health officials will work with U.S. officials to establish a Mexican government-financed program that would allow migrants to receive a transplant in the United states.

"We feel profoundly responsible for each of our compatriots that needs help and it's for that reason that we are fighting to improve the quality of health, well-being and dignity of Mexicans living abroad," Hernandez said in a statement.

The announcement followed the death of an illegal migrant forced to return to Mexico from Los Angeles to receive a bone marrow transplant. Officials said he likely would have lived had he been able to receive the bone marrow transplant sooner.
