2nd Artificial Heart Implant Takes Place in Louisville

The surgeons who implanted the world's first self-contained artificial heart in a 59-year-old man more than two months ago announced they have installed a second such device in a 70-year-old man.

The latest patient, identified as Tom Christerson, 70, of Central City, Ky, was reported recovering in intensive care at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.

Dr. Laman Gray Jr., who performed the surgeries along with Dr. Robert Dowling, said the surgery "went extremely well." He said Christerson had never had a previous heart surgery, but suffers from kidney problems.

The first patient, Robert Tools, a 59-year-old diabetic, who was said to be too sick to be considered for a heart transplant, was given the AbioCor plastic and titanium heart device on July 2. His recovery has exceeded the hopes of the clinical team, and he was transferred out of intensive care earlier this month.

The self-contained mechanical heart, made by Abiomed Inc., is the first major advance in the development of an artificial replacement heart in nearly two decades.
