Valery Shumakov,
credited with performing Russia's first heart, liver, and pancreas
transplants, has been awarded the order of Andrew the First-Called
by President Vladimir Putin.
Shumakov,
who is director of Russia's transplantation research institute,
was honored for outstanding services in the field of health care
and medical science, according to the Russian president's office.
The announcement
said Shumakov, who will be 70 on November 9, had in recent years
made discoveries that increased the length of time organs could
be preserved for transplantation.
Shumakov has
the title of Hero of Socialist Labour and two orders "For
Services for the Fatherland. "
