Singer Freddy Fender to Have Kidney Transplant

Singer Freddy Fender, 64, who is fighting health problems including hepatitis C, will receive a kidney transplant next months with the organ donated by his 21-year-old daughter Marla Garcia..

Fender said he also needs a liver transplant because of cirrhosis. Doctors would have preferred to do both transplants at once, but Fender said he can no longer wait for a cadaver kidney to become available.

"Freddy needs a kidney more than he needs a liver," said his wife, Vangie Fender. "He can't tolerate dialysis very well. It makes him weak."

The transplant is scheduled for January at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

"It's not that easy to ask someone for an organ," said Fender, who had such hits as "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" in the 1970s.
